Mahikeng: Departments and Public Entities reaffirmed the province’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the management of public resources entrusted to government as they submitted the Annual Financial Statements (AFS) to Auditor General South Africa complying with provision of the section 40(1)(c) of Public Finance Management Act No1 of 1999.

The AFS’s are a cornerstone of good governance, enabling government, oversight bodies, and citizens to assess whether public resources have been used efficiently and economically to deliver government services.

The AFS submission ceremony brought together Heads of Departments, Board Members of Public Entities, Chief Executive Officers, Audit Committees, Chief Financial Officers, Finance Managers, and officials from finance and internal control environments across the provincial government.

Addressing the gathering, Provincial Treasury Head of Department, Ndlela Kunene said that the submitted statements must reflect the integrity of governance systems, the strength of internal controls, and the quality of leadership across government institutions. He stressed that the challenge facing government now extends beyond compliance — it requires building capable, ethical, and responsive institutions that prioritise citizen needs.

We reaffirm our collective responsibility to account to the people of the North West for the resources entrusted to us through the submission of the Annual Financial Statements.

He called on public sector leaders and resource custodians to promote a culture of accountability, professionalism, and integrity — one where financial discipline becomes embedded in the culture of the public service rather than being limited to audit cycles.
