In concerted efforts to address financial challenges within provincial municipalities, MEC Kenetswe Mosenogi engaged with the Provincial Executive Representatives (PERs) from several municipalities, including Naledi, Mamusa, Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati, Ditsobotla, Ramotshere Moilwa, Tswaing, Kgetlengrivier, Madibeng, Maquassi Hills, and the City of Matlosana. These PERs, appointed by the Executive Council, are pivotal in supporting municipalities to implement Financial Recovery Plans (FRPs) as strategized by the National Treasury.
During the engagement, MEC Mosenogi emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs of marginalized and impoverished communities, urging the PERs to ensure the successful implementation of the FRPs. She further reiterated the importance of this approach by underscoring that it is critical for municipalities to adopt sustainable and funded budgets that will maintain essential services and infrastructure, which are crucial for community well-being and economic growth.
“The current financial state of our provincial municipalities demands urgent attention therefore, we cannot afford a laissez-faire attitude when the livelihoods of our communities depend on the services provided by municipalities,” echoed MEC Mosenogi.
The MEC highlighted the crucial role of municipalities in enhancing service delivery and maintaining public infrastructure. She asserted that well-structured FRPs are fundamental in fostering consistent service delivery and improving the quality of life for residents. She further highlighted how a municipality’s financial health influences its ability to foster economic development. By investing in infrastructure, education, and public services, municipalities create an environment conducive to business growth. This, in turn, attracts businesses, generates job opportunities, and contributes to the economic prosperity of the area.
Concluding her remarks, the MEC acknowledged the challenges that the province faces in reducing unemployment and emphasized the need to coordinate municipal finances to enhance service delivery. To ensure the alienation and success of these challenges, MEC Mosenogi called for a cultural shift within municipalities, advocating for transparency and accountability in financial management to rebuild trust among residents, investors, and stakeholders.
