MAHIKENG – Grade 7 learners at Senkgwe Primary School were encouraged to begin thinking deliberately about their future career paths as the North West Provincial Treasury joined North-West University (NWU) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in the school’s Career Day programme.
Officials from Provincial Treasury’s Human Resource Development (HRD) Unit participated in the programme to expose learners to career opportunities and help them understand the relationship between their interests, education choices, skills development and future career pathways. The session provided learners with information intended to broaden their awareness of opportunities within government institutions and the wider world of work. Learners were also encouraged to remain committed to their studies, work hard and begin making informed decisions about their future while still at school.
Addressing the learners, Ms Kelebogile Segooa from the HRD Unit emphasised the importance of self-assessment when considering a future career. “Reflect on your personal interests, values, strengths and passions, and consider which activities or subjects align with the career path you are interested in,” Segooa said.
The Human Resource Development Unit also shared information on skills development and training opportunities, as well as universities and colleges offering qualifications relevant to different career paths. The participation of NWU and SANDF broadened the range of institutions represented during the Career Day and gave learners an opportunity to engage with different education and career environments.
Keabetswe Mosane of the Human Resource Development Unit also expressed that through its participation in initiatives such as the Senkgwe Primary School Career Day, Provincial Treasury seeks to contribute to efforts that expose young people to information that can assist them in making informed education and career choices.
