RUSTENBURG – North West MEC for Finance, Kenetswe Mosenogi, has congratulated provincial departments, public entities and other institutions recognised for achieving clean audits in the 2025/26 financial year, describing their achievements as an important demonstration of financial accountability, institutional discipline and commitment to good governance. MEC Mosenogi was speaking at the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) Clean Audit Awards ceremony held at Hedgehog’s Nest in Rustenburg, under the theme “Beyond Compliance: Enforcing Accountability to Achieve Better Audit Outcomes and Service Delivery”.
The MEC emphasised that clean audit outcomes should not be viewed merely as an indication of compliance with financial management requirements, but as an important foundation for effective governance and improved service delivery. “Compliance alone is not enough. We must build clean administrations where every transaction is audit-ready, supported by clear and credible evidence, and where public resources are managed responsibly. A clean audit must ultimately contribute to better governance and improved service delivery,” said MEC Mosenogi.
For the 2025/26 financial year, three provincial institutions achieved clean audits, namely the North West Provincial Treasury, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and the North West Provincial Legislature.
In addition, five provincial public entities achieved clean audits, further demonstrating the importance of sound financial management practices and effective internal controls across government institutions. MEC Mosenogi commended the leadership, management and officials of the institutions for their commitment to maintaining financial discipline and accountability. She particularly welcomed North West Provincial Treasury’s achievement of 13 consecutive clean audits, describing the milestone as an important example of sustained institutional commitment to sound financial management.
“As Provincial Treasury, we have a responsibility to lead by example. Our achievement must strengthen our resolve to support departments, public entities and municipalities in improving their financial management practices and audit outcomes,” said MEC Mosenogi.
The MEC stressed that clean administrations require consistent leadership and collective responsibility at every level of government. She called on heads of departments, chief executive officers of public entities, municipal managers and accounting officers to strengthen internal controls, address audit findings and ensure that accountability becomes an integral part of institutional operations.
The MEC further expressed optimism that more institutions across the province could achieve clean audits through sustained improvements in financial management, effective oversight and a culture of accountability. She emphasised that the recognition of institutions achieving clean audits should also encourage those still facing audit challenges to intensify corrective measures and strengthen their systems of governance.
“The true value of sound financial management must ultimately be reflected in the quality of services delivered to our communities. As we celebrate these achievements, we must remain focused on building capable, accountable institutions that use public resources effectively and responsibly,” concluded MEC Mosenogi.
